Happy New Year, everyone. Here’s some middle school Death Cab for Cutie to launch you into 2012 with the kind of emo angst you need to take on this weird, duckfaced world. Transatlanticism is one of my favorite albums of theirs, which is saying a lot, because I’m not a huge fan of DCFC. I do have an unhealthy obsession with Ben Gibbard’s weight, however. Everyone complained that he was too fat, then he got skinny and we were all like, “What! You’re too skinny!”

Guy can’t get a break these days.

  1. A mash-up of this song and U2′s ‘New Year’s Day’ was rattling around in my head all day yesterday. Apropos, I suppose, but also somewhat maddening.

  2. I was thinking about making a New Years mix, but I couldn’t think of any songs beyond DCFC and U2, and I don’t have any U2 on my computer out of respect for my ears.

  3. You don’t like DCFC!? I’m surprised – I thought the singer/songwriter in you would have given them some leeway. I’ve listened to Trans, Plans & Stairs a lot – and properly when I’ve been out running(more about that in some other posts) but Codes is dire imho – a triumph of post-processing/studio tinkering over good basic melody, words and songcraft – the biggest disappointment of last year probably but it doesn’t matter who you are – coming up with good stuff is like the stock market – past performance can’t be used as an indicator of future performance.
