SPOILERS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SPOILERS
Alright, let’s just get this out of the way: the movie is fucking awesome. Fucking. Awesome. The guy who played McCoy was unbelieveable. Like, okay, Spock was great and Kirk was Kirk, but I never in my wildest dreams would’ve thought they’d get McCoy down so well! Holy shit! I mean, everyone was great.
UPDATE: THAT’S CARL URBAN? THAT’S FUCKING EOMER?! HOLY SHIT!
I’m sure the Trekkies are shaking in their boots now because their beloved series is getting a massive reboot (more on that in a second), but they should just eat crow because this movie was not only a great homage to the original series and movies, but also a good action flick in its own right.
So, like I said, Massive Reboot — did JJ Abrams just single-handedly reset the ENTIRE Star Trek universe? Seriously? There was no “happy ending” at the end; the black hole didn’t mysteriously make things back the way they were, and as Old Spock said, Kirk knew his dad in the other universe. So there’s either two explanations: 1, that this universe, the one created for this movie, is the universe in which the entire Star Trek series is set, or 2, that JJ Abrams destroyed the old universe (aka the Star Trek(s) we all know and love) with one fell swoop of his red matter-filled hand.
I honestly don’t know the original series well enough to find out the answer to this. Obviously Pike is in the original series (he was the captain in the pilot episode), but I don’t know of any mention of Kirk ever having met Old Spock in the original series. Or ANYWHERE, for that matter. So what I can only conclude is that, at some point in the original series’ universe (aka the universe wherein the movies, ST:TNG/DSN/Voyager all exist), Spock went to save Romulus from a supernova, made a bigass black hole, got sucked into it, and essentially made a new Star Trek universe.
Now, any of you quantum physicists in the room would say at this point that now TWO universes have been created (this is debated about more in the Grandfather paradox). In other words, Spock hasn’t erased the old Star Trek universe, he’s essentially created another one, and now lives in it.
This, either way, is fucking awesome. I applaud JJ Abrams for having the balls to say, “You know, the new Star Trek movies are kind of lacking, let’s spice it up a bit,” while NOT succumbing to the “revert everything back to the way it was” lame ending.
Anyway, I digress. Using time travel as a pivotal plot point in this movie is great, because it (along with other various things in the movie) offer homage to the entire Star Trek series, which (as we all know) often dabbles in time travel. The fact that each character got to say a catchphrase was also awesome, AS WAS Sulu swordfighting! Fuck yeah! AND THE RED SHIRT DYING in the free fall! Oh god, I loved it so much. Kirk and the green girl. The doodad in Uhura’s ear. THE KOBAYASHI MARU (and the fact that he says “I don’t believe in no-win situations”).
Also Uhura was ridiculously hot.
OKAY ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO COMMENT PLEASE DO!
